Hatcher Alpine Xperience (HAX, dba Skeetawk) is a 501 (c)(3) organization working to develop a year- round recreational and educational alpine facility in Hatcher Pass, Alaska called Skeetawk. Starting with a grassroots group of dedicated volunteers and non-profit board members, HAX successfully completed a triple chairlift and associated supporting infrastructure and is ready for its first season of operations. Skeetawk is now a regional ski area and outdoor recreation center scheduled to begin operation in December of 2020.
HAX is seeking a qualified candidate to serve as the General Manager for front-of-house operations at Skeetawk and will work directly for the Board of Directors, alongside the Mountain Director and possess the following qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Experience with accounting software, QuickBooks preferred
Point of Sales systems
Audit-supporting document preparation
Grant writing experience — intermediate or better Grant management experience
Passion and enthusiasm for mountains, alpine skiing, Hatcher Pass Willingness and enthusiasm to work towards our mission goal
Experience working with Non-Profit Boards and Public:
Ability to communicate well with the Board of Directors and the general public Ability to attend and participate in board and committee meetings
Ability to communicate to the media
Good organizational skills
Ability to work well independently and on a team Ability to manage a crew of up to ten employees
Duties and Responsibilities
Manage – Daily administration of the organization including point of sales, correspondence, files, record keeping, bookkeeping, permits, grants, employee records, phone calls, emails, contact with partner organizations, volunteer applications and contact, regular communication with the Board Chair and Mountain Director, membership records and renewals, general public announcements as approved by the Board of Directors and annual calendar.
Finance – Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, knowledge and prior experience with QuickBooks. Choosing and/or integrating a Point-of-Sale (POS) system upon your hire. Annual and five-year budget projections. Working with board treasurer to prepare necessary end-of-year tax records for non-profit reporting.
Systems Development and Management – Develop and Manage Skeetawk systems in coordination with the Mountain Director including food and beverage, merchandise, equipment rental, ski school, season pass and ticket sales, employee payroll, volunteer management, event planning and marketing.
Outreach and Assistance – Assist Board of Directors representing the organization to the public. Schedule and coordinate board member participation in public facing meetings and events outside the organization. Communicate with the media; assist in or provide presentations to local and civic organizations and attend meetings, coordinate tours of Skeetawk for dignitaries and interested donors.
Grants – Apply for and manage grants with direction and assistance from the board. Augment the Board of Directors’ mission of finding donors and grants. Board has a primary responsibility of finding donors and grants while the applicant will construct and manage actual grant applications and award requirements.
Coordinate – Day-to-day administration and operations of the organization – paying bills, applying for appropriate permits, tracking grants, answering phone calls and emails, networking with partner organizations, etc., manage front-of-house staff.
Oversee – Staff and Volunteer work force with the Mountain Director to find, train and assign staff and volunteer duties.
Cross Train – Applicant must be willing to cross train in other department roles including; lift operations, guest service, area maintenance, housekeeping, and general operations tasks including snow removal.
Hours and Compensation
Availability – Be flexible with hours worked and availability to answer board and public calls, texts emails, Slack inquiries, etc. Must attend monthly board meetings. No schedule “blocking” except for reasonable vacation times. May be required to work (evenings) as well as Weekends. Palmer Alaska is a beautiful and scenic town ringed by mountains and glaciers. Applicant would be expected to live in or move to the local area once hired.
Hours – This is a salaried, exempt, weekly position. While hours are dictated by need, the prospective employee must also work enough hours to complete all tasks required to complete the job of ensuring that the Hatcher Alpine Xperience and Skeetawk run smoothly and consistently. Must be flexible with hours worked including evenings and weekends and be available to answer board and public calls, texts, emails, etc. Must attend monthly Board meetings.
Compensation – Salary $50k range, depending on experience. Benefits also include employee skiing and dependent passes.
