Position: Ski or Snowboard Instructor

Reports to: Ski and Snowboard School Program Supervisor (Youth, Adult etc.)
Instructors spend more time with guests than any other employee and while they are tasked with improving the skiing/riding ability of their students, their primary goal is to keep them safe and make a personal connection with each individual. It’s this focus on a connection that creates a fun experience that inspires a love for the sport and encourages them to return. For the majority of our lesson assignments, an empathetic, patient yet outgoing personality and a passion for helping others learn is more important than an advanced, technical ability. So while previous snowsports teaching experience is highly desired, it is not required.
Instructors are assigned to our different lesson programs based on their experience, availability, personality and work performance. They also contribute to the operation of the school and the rental shop beyond just the lessons and are often assigned to perform ambassadorial or labor duties to support our programs. We provide a large variety of both paid and voluntary training opportunities for all experience levels.
Work levels vary based on full/part-time status, performance and customer demand and base pay is determined by certification and experience.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current PSIA/AASI certification highly desired, but not required
- Expertise in teaching and working with children highly desired.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills required
- An outgoing and energetic personality with the patience and desire to guide others to learn and develop
- Confident skiing/riding ability on green terrain as a minimum; with a passion for snowsports and the outdoors
- A demonstrated ability and willingness to learn and adapt and work both independently and as part of a team
- Must own contemporary ski or snowboard equipment and clothing
- Must be comfortable with the changing dynamics of a seasonal business
- Employment in this position is subject to a satisfactory background screening

- Create a fun and supportive lesson environment, connecting with your students and providing consistent feedback and positive reinforcement
- Set achievable goals and celebrate successes to build confidence and a sense of accomplishment in the students
- Remain engaged throughout the lesson to ensure your communication and presentation style and the level of challenge matches your students learning styles and ability
- Keep the students moving to allow ample practice time and an opportunity to experience the movements
- Communicate to supervisors or other instructors in a timely manner if you need assistance or have a student that would benefit from being moved into another class
- Be an ambassador for the sport and the resort, and teach all assigned lessons in a manner consistent with the school’s philosophies, methods, and values
- Perform all supporting tasks such as boot fitting, guest check-in, greeting, snow removal, conveyor lift operation, teaching area setup and all other labor duties as needed
- Know and follow all policies and procedures as they pertain to teaching and related tasks
- Be a proponent of Stevens Pass vision, mission, values, and service philosophy
- Gain intimate knowledge of the department’s programs, lessons and promotions, to be able to help connect guests to the right product
- Uphold a high personal standard of punctuality, professionalism, work quality and appearance, arriving at assigned line-ups, on time and fit to work in full uniform
- Communicate concerns, scheduling conflicts, availability changes or questions to supervisory or management staff in a timely manner
- Be willing and flexible to teach in any program.
- Possess the ability to remain composed and use good judgment when dealing with customer service situations and scenarios that are not clearly defined by department policy and procedure.
- Be a good example for the sport and industry by managing personal stress levels, maintaining a positive attitude and communicating enthusiasm for learning and continued professional development through training
- Assume shared responsibility along with employees and management staff to ensure all employee areas are kept clean and tidy and required maintenance or supply/ordering needs are reported in a timely manner
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, ski and/or snowboard; use hands to finger/handle or feel, stoop/kneel/crouch or crawl, and reach with hands and arms. Sometimes the employee is required to climb or balance. The employee will need to be able to lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds with assistance. Assist fallen students in getting up and maintaining balance utilizing proper lifting techniques when assisting students. Must have a good close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Will be required to walk and balance on wet, icy and uneven footing. Ability to perform the duties of this job in all weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be loud on occasion.
